Smith-Martin for School Board

Citing a strong need for improved fiscal accountability, performance and student achievement, Robin Smith-Martin announced his candidacy for the Monroe County School Board District 1 seat being vacated by Steven Pribramsky. Smith-Martin — who grew up in the Keys — is a management consultant with expertise in finance, marketing, and technology.
“I’m a graduate of the Monroe County public schools. My two kids are about to enter the same system,” remarked Smith-Martin, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English, and earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina, where he focused on finance and international business.
Smith-Martin is a past member of the Keys Energy Advisory Committee, and currently serves as Vice-President of the Board of Directors for Reef Relief. “Rob” Smith-Martin, 35, lives with his wife Beth and two children. They own their home on Fogarty Avenue in Key West. In his spare time, Rob is a guitar playing singer/songwriter.
“The Keys are a great place to live and work, but to sustain our quality of life we must guarantee our kids a world-class education to prepare them for a globally competitive job market," according to Smith-Martin. "Part of my graduate education was international, so I’ve seen the challenge first-hand."
“The recent financial scandals have revealed a serious lack of controls regarding spending and reporting. This is unacceptable. I will work with Superintendent Burke to institute proper financial controls for our tax dollars and district resources,” Smith-Martin said. “As a fiscal conservative, I believe the District needs reforms that reflect a measurable return on our tax dollars.”
Smith-Martin is organizing his campaign for the August 24th election, and asks anyone with similar interests in improving the school system to contact him at 305.890.6163, or visit his campaign website at www.Smith-Martin.com.
“It’s going to take a lot of people working together to address the non-performing elements and vested interests in our school District,” said Smith-Martin. “I will be a strong advocate for student achievement, and performance-based incentives. Performance Management is what I have been trained to do."
“As a graduate of Key West High School, Class of 1992, pride is certainly a motivating factor for my getting involved. But, fundamentally, I’m doing this for my kids.”
